Since you mentioned it goes away when you mute the speaker, it means it is associated with windows, because we all know MOBO beeps are not in close succession as much.
The only 'heartbeat' sound i know is that one when a HDD is gives that Tick-Tick sound, but most of the time the HDD is always dead when that sound comes out, but it is not as loud.
